For the mousepad we used an about 2 mm thick vegetable tanned leather which we cut into the right size. We cut in the pattern and carved it with different stamps. Then we first dyed the giraffe in color and after that the whole mousepad in brown. At the end we cut smooth the edges and finished the mousepad, so that it doesn't stain.
